Dropped $120 on a new cutterhead rebuild kit and it paid for itself in one shift

I was dealing with a worn cutterhead on my 12-inch dredge last Tuesday, chewing through way too much fuel for what we were pulling. Found a rebuild kit online for $120 and swapped it out in the yard before breakfast, and the next day we moved 30% more material with the same engine load. Anyone else ever gamble on a cheap rebuild kit and get lucky like that, or did I just dodge a bullet?

Man that's a hell of a score right there. I've been burned before on cheap rebuild kits for my buddy's 8-inch dredge, the gaskets were all wrong and it leaked oil everywhere before I even got it back in the water. But then last spring I grabbed a $90 impeller kit for a smaller unit and it ran smoother than the factory part for three months straight until I sold the whole rig. Sounds like you hit the sweet spot where aftermarket guys actually do their homework. The real trick is knowing when to trust the cheap stuff and when to just pay up for OEM, and it sounds like you nailed it this time.
