Just hit 500 layers on a single drawing file for a job in Boise

I was working on the site plans for a new industrial park out there, and the layer count just kept climbing with all the utility lines, grading, and notes. When I saw 500 pop up, it made me stop and think about how much detail we're expected to pack in now compared to when I started. Has anyone else had a project blow up like that and found a good way to keep it all sorted without slowing your machine to a crawl?

My record was 723 layers on a Phoenix airport expansion. The file name was basically "DO_NOT_OPEN_FINAL_v3a_REALLYFINAL.dwg". My computer fan sounded like a jet engine taking off.

Did you ever figure out which layers were actually needed? I bet half of those were old site surveys and random consultant xrefs that never got purged. My old laptop would just give up and crash if I tried to plot something that big.
