Someone told me my false bottom was trapping too much moisture and rotting roots, so I switched to a thin mesh layer instead.

I had been using a thick gravel false bottom for over a year, and after a friend pointed out that my moss was staying wet for weeks at a time, I swapped to just a piece of plastic mesh resting on a single layer of perlite, and now my terrarium dries out like it should, has anyone else had issues with gravel holding too much water?

@elizabeth_gonzalez yeah the gravel might have drainage holes at the bottom but the water just sits in the gaps between the rocks. i had the same issue with big pebbles. switched to a mesh screen over a thin perlite layer myself and everything drains way faster. the key is keeping that false bottom thin so air can move through it.

Did the gravel trap water even with drainage holes below?
