Overheard a kid at the plant nursery call my terrarium a 'boomer jar'. Got me thinking about how the hobby has changed since I started in 2010.

Wait, what even makes a terrarium "boomer" style?

Had a buddy who thought he was making a cool modern terrarium. Used one of those geometric glass shapes with the little metal frame, all the fancy charcoal and drainage layers, the whole works. Stuck a bonsai tree cutting in it and some pink pebbles on top. Thing died in like three weeks because he never sealed it right and the whole setup was way too dry for what he tried to grow. Now he just has a sad plastic fern on his desk and jokes that his "boomer" style was actually more functional.

Remember when terrariums were just glass bowls with a fern and some moss? I used to make those simple ones all the time. But seeing the crazy detailed builds people post now, with tiny waterfalls and perfect layers of substrate, totally changed my view. That kid's comment made me realize my old style does look pretty dated compared to today's mini-ecosystems. It's cool how the hobby has leveled up.
