Rant: enough with the duct tape on cat costumes

I've seen three posts this week where people just wrap duct tape around a cat's middle to hold on a cape or wings. Last Sunday at the park, a guy had his orange tabby in a taped-on shark fin and the cat kept trying to chew it off. Duct tape sticks to fur, pulls when they move, and leaves a nasty residue. I get that no-sew means simple, but there are sticky Velcro wraps for $5 at Michael's that don't ruin the coat. Has anyone actually tested duct tape on a long-haired breed without a meltdown?

The vet I take my cats to had a case last spring where duct tape residue matted a Persian's fur so badly they had to shave the whole belly. That cat was in a cone for two weeks, not because of the costume, but because the skin underneath got irritated and infected. If people want a costume that bad, just use a harness with the wings clipped on, it costs the same and won't end in a shaved cat.
