My cat's cactus costume flopped until I added pipe cleaner spines at the last minute
I spent two hours on Saturday making a cardboard cactus costume for my 9 pound tabby, Milo, using green felt and hot glue. It looked fine flat on the table, but when I put it on him he just looked like a lumpy green potato, not cute at all. Then I remembered the pack of brown pipe cleaners I bought for a school project my nephew never finished, so I bent about 20 of them into little V shapes and poked them through the felt. Suddenly he looked like a proper saguaro and my roommate laughed for a solid 5 minutes, which never happens. The lesson I learned is that texture and sticking out bits matter way more than perfect shapes, especially for small animals where the costume just sits on their back. Has anyone else had a costume that looked wrong until you added some random bathroom or craft drawer item to it?
Man, I gotta push back on this one. Poking 20 pipe cleaners through felt right into your cat is a bad idea, because those wire ends can scratch skin or get chewed off and swallowed, and a 9 pound cat will absolutely gnaw on weird stuff stuck to his back. A lumpy green potato costume that stays on safe beats a "proper saguaro" that ends with a vet bill, and you got lucky this time. Plus the whole point of a cat costume is a photo, not a perfect shape, so texture was never the real problem. Next time glue the spines on the outside or use soft yarn, and skip the wires poking your buddy.
