Warning: Heard a guy at the electronics counter say he just throws out consoles with disc drive issues
He was telling his buddy it's never worth the fix. I've brought back three PS2s with that exact problem just by cleaning the laser lens with a cotton swab and some isopropyl. Has anyone else had a win with something people usually give up on?

Gotta jump in here... @tylerr29 is right that cleaning the laser is step one, but people forget the laser sleds get stiff with old grease too. I've fixed three PS3s that were skipping discs just by adding a tiny drop of sewing machine oil to the rails the laser slides on. The canned air trick never works because it just moves the dust deeper into the mechanism. Also, if you use a cotton swab for the lens, make sure it's the pointed kind for electronics, not the round makeup ones that leave fibers behind. Most people toss their consoles way too early when the fix is just some alcohol and a dab of oil...

Cleaning the laser is usually the first thing to try.

Yeah but what do you actually clean it with, like rubbing alcohol? I've seen people mess up the lens using the wrong stuff. Is there a specific kind of swab that works best for those tiny parts? I tried the canned air once and it just pushed the dust around, lol.
