My neighbor told me his 'secret' for fixing a PS4 fan and I almost believed him

I was outside yesterday, trying to blow dust out of my PS4 with a can of air, when my neighbor Frank walked over. He saw what I was doing and said, 'Oh, the ol' jet engine noise? I fixed mine by putting three drops of olive oil on the fan bearing.' I just stared at him. He was dead serious, said it worked like a charm for about a week before it started making a sound like a dying raccoon. I asked him where he got that idea, and he said, 'It works on a squeaky door, why not a console?' That conversation hit different because it made me realize how many people are out there just winging it with household items on expensive electronics. I spent the next hour online making sure I hadn't accidentally done something that dumb myself. Has anyone else gotten a repair tip that sounded legit but was actually a disaster waiting to happen?

My cousin fixed her Xbox with a heat gun, so maybe he's onto something.

Franklin down the street tried fixing his laptop fan with WD-40 last month. It worked for about two days before the whole thing started smoking. He said the label said it lubricates, so he figured that was good enough. Maybe we should start a support group for people who treat their electronics like squeaky screen doors.
