Warning: My old way of booking flights was a total money pit

I used to just grab whatever flight looked okay and eat the cost. Now I set a Google Flights alert for my next target city, like Medellin, and wait for the price to drop below $400. How do you guys keep your travel costs from getting stupid?

Wait, did I miss something? @emmafisher, I usually set a few alerts, like for a big price drop or if it hits a specific low. Just "below $400" feels too broad because it could ping you for a tiny, normal sale.
