That time I posted a WIP and got roasted for my canvas texture

I put up a partially done landscape piece last week with a really rough canvas texture layer underneath, thinking it added character. Someone straight up commented that it looked like I forgot to smooth my base layer before painting. They weren't wrong, the grain was super distracting once I zoomed out. Has anyone else had a texture choice backfire and completely change how they prep now?

The rough canvas texture on my last attempt made me feel like I was fingerpainting on a sidewalk. My art teacher just stared at me and said "well, that's... textured." Spent three days trying to convince myself it was intentional instead of just bad planning.
