A comment on my portfolio site last week really threw me off

I was at a small art meet in Portland, showing my digital pieces on a tablet. This guy, Mark, looked at my character design for maybe 30 seconds and said, 'Your line weight is all over the place, it looks rushed.' Honestly, it happened right after I'd spent a full month on that piece. He didn't even ask about the concept or colors, just zeroed in on that one thing. Has a blunt critique like that ever made you second-guess a finished piece you were proud of?

Forget that guy, trust your own work.

Mark sounds like the type who'd critique a sunset for uneven color distribution. Kevin Bailey has the right idea about trusting your own work, but man, that doubt can stick. I had a neighbor once tell me my garden layout was "chaotic" after I'd spent a whole season on it. Sometimes people just pick the one thing they know a word about and hammer it, don't they? Makes you want to ask if they've ever made anything themselves.
