My 1980s road atlas still shows the USSR as one giant pink blob

Pulled it out of a box in my parents' basement last weekend. My nephew asked why Russia was so huge and I had to explain the Cold War. He was more confused that we used paper maps at all.

God, I bet that nephew of yours thought you were pulling his leg about the whole Cold War thing, didn't he? Kids today have no idea how much the world has changed just in the last forty years. What did your parents do, just keep that atlas on the coffee table for show, or did they actually use it to plan trips back then?
