Shoutout to the guy who gave me a spare battery mid-hike

I was up on Mt. Hood last fall, my headlamp died about 2 miles from the trailhead in the dark. Some random hiker handed me a spare AA and just said "keep it," saved my whole evening. Anyone else keep extra batteries stashed in their pack just in case?

Power banks are great until they die or the cable craps out on you. A single AA battery wrapped in a napkin or shoved in a ziploc bag is way less likely to fail at the worst moment. I've got three loose batteries taped to the inside of my pack lid right now, never had a leak or a short in years of doing that. Sometimes the simple stuff just works better when you're actually out there.

I get why people do that, but honestly I think keeping batteries loose in a pack is asking for trouble. They can leak or short out against metal stuff. I just carry a small power bank now and keep my headlamp on a spare set when I'm out.
