A guy at a coffee shop in Austin showed me a scary trick with public Wi-Fi
I was working at a cafe downtown about two months ago, and this guy at the next table leaned over and said, 'You know they can see everything you're doing, right?' He then pulled out his own laptop and, in about 30 seconds, showed me a list of every device connected to the cafe's network. He pointed at my laptop's name on his screen and said, 'That's you. If I wanted to, I could try to get into your stuff from here.' It wasn't a threat, he was just making a point, but it freaked me out. I always knew public Wi-Fi was risky, but seeing it happen right in front of me made it real. Now I use a VPN every single time I connect outside my house. Has anyone else had a moment like that that made you change a habit for good?

Read an article once calling public Wi-Fi a hacker's buffet.

That part about him pointing at your laptop name on his screen... yeah, that's the real wake-up call. It's one thing to know it in theory, but seeing your own device on someone else's list is a whole different feeling. That guy did you a favor, honestly. I had a similar scare when my phone tried to auto-join a fake network with the cafe's name. Using a VPN is the bare minimum now, it just isn't worth the risk.
