Vent: That loan officer who talked me into a secured card...
I was in a Chase branch in Phoenix last year trying to get my first credit card, and the loan officer said my score was too low for anything decent... she kept pushing this secured card with a $200 deposit. I thought she was just trying to hit a quota, but she actually walked me through how it reports to the bureaus every month. Six months later my score jumped 40 points... has anyone else had a banker give them solid advice like that?

Oh man, that's such a solid story and I totally get why you were skeptical at first. It's so easy to feel like they're just pushing their own agenda, especially when you're new to all this stuff. I had a similar thing happen at a credit union in Tucson - the teller actually talked me out of a high fee card and pointed me to their basic student card that had zero annual fees. It's rare to get that kind of genuine help from a banker, but when it happens it really sticks with you. Did you end up keeping that secured card for a while or did you upgrade once your score went up?

That Chase loan officer in Phoenix did right by you. I've seen a lot of people get stuck with cards that don't report to all three bureaus, and that $200 deposit doing its job every month is what really moved the needle for you.
