Talking to my mechanic about his mortgage application made me check my own score

He said the bank almost denied him because his score was 680, and they wanted 720 for the best rate. I always thought anything over 650 was fine. I checked mine on Credit Karma and it's 698, which is way closer to his situation than I realized. Has anyone else had a wake-up call about what a 'good' score actually is for big loans?

Did you see that article about how 750 is the new 700? It's getting ridiculous.

It's wild how they keep moving the finish line, @parkerkim... makes you wonder if the whole system is just designed to keep people chasing a number.

Wow, that's the thing, the goalposts keep moving. Lenders keep raising the bar for what they call "excellent" credit. What score will they demand in five years?
