My credit union beat the big bank app by 40 points and I'm still annoyed about it
So I've been slowly rebuilding my credit after some dumb stuff in my early 20s, and I had a card with a big bank and a card with my local credit union here in Tucson. I figured the big bank would help more since they have all that tech and send me those score updates every week, right? Wrong. The big bank card had a $39 annual fee and a 26% rate, and their app kept showing me a score that was frozen from like 8 months back. My credit union card had no fee, and when I called them they actually pulled a fresh report and walked me through why my score was stuck at 612. Turns out my usage on the big bank card was sitting at 71% of the limit while the credit union one stayed under 20%. I paid the big bank card down over two cycles and my score jumped from 618 to 658, which is the biggest single move I've seen in a year. Funny part is the credit union rep told me this on a 10 minute call while the big bank's chat bot just kept sending me articles. Did any of you get a bigger bump from fixing usage than from paying off old stuff?
Usage is the fastest fix by far, way quicker than waiting on old stuff to drop off. Had a similar jump just from getting one card under 30%, took like two months.
