I paid $300 for a 'credit repair' service that just sent dispute letters I could have mailed myself.
I saw an ad online promising to fix my credit fast after a rough patch. They charged me $300 upfront and said they'd remove negative items from my report. For six months, all they did was mail the same generic dispute letters to the credit bureaus on my behalf. I could have downloaded those forms for free and sent them myself with a stamp. They never answered my calls when I asked for updates, and none of the items actually got removed. I checked my reports myself and saw the disputes were all verified as accurate. It was a complete waste of money and time. Has anyone had a good experience with a legitimate way to handle accurate negative marks, or is it just a waiting game?

That's a rough deal, sorry you went through that. Read an article once that said most of those services just do the basic disputes anyone can do for free. For stuff that's actually correct on your report, it really is just waiting for it to fall off after seven years. The only real move is to build new, good credit history on top of it over time.

Yeah, the part about building new history on top of the old stuff is the real key. It feels so slow and unfair when you're in it, but it really does work. I had to just focus on one new card and tiny, regular payments for what felt like forever. That seven year wait is brutal, but watching the score slowly climb once you start adding good months is the only thing that keeps you going.

Wait, it really takes a full seven years for that stuff to drop off?
