Appreciation post: That writing prompt book I ignored for 6 months on my shelf

I bought a $15 prompt book called '642 Things to Write About' last year and it just sat there collecting dust because I figured prompts were too simplistic for real practice. But after hitting a total block on my fantasy novel for 3 weeks straight, I finally cracked it open and wrote a weird little story about a man who finds a door in his basement that leads to a Tuesday morning in 1987. Has anyone else had a writing tool they scoffed at that turned out way more useful than they expected?

Huh, I mean it's just a prompt book. Not really some deep writing tool, more like a warmup you do in 5 minutes before the real work starts. Glad it helped you get unstuck though, I guess.

Wait, do people actually call a prompt book a "writing tool"?
