Let's argue about whether you should prune your ugly tomato plants or just let them go wild

I had two tomato plants in the same bed last season - one I trimmed religiously and it stayed compact but gave me maybe 12 decent fruits, the other I ignored completely and it turned into a sprawling mess that produced over 40 lumpy but delicious tomatoes. Which side are you on, do you get better yield from pruning or does nature know what it's doing?

Wait, you're telling me those lumpy misshapen ones might actually taste better? That's blowing my mind a little... I always just grabbed the pretty ones without thinking about it.
