The 3 year difference at the Port of Seattle was night and day
I used to run a crawler crane at the Port of Seattle back in 2020, and the old operators taught me some bad habits like never setting up your matting level. Fast forward to last week, I came back to help on a weekend job and saw they finally swapped out all the old Grove cranes for Liebherrs. The new setup and training cut their average container turnover time by almost 40 minutes per shift. Has anyone else seen a yard completely transform after they changed equipment or training rules?

That night and day 3 year difference you saw is just how things go when people stop doing things 'the way they've always been done.'" It's wild how much we resist small changes until we see the results staring us in the face.

That "the way they've always been done" thing hits hard. It's like some old timers think if they didn't learn it, it's not worth learning. But look, 40 minutes per shift adds up fast, that's almost four hours a week saved per crane if you run two shifts. The real kicker is they probably could have seen those gains years ago if someone just pushed through the resistance. Stubborn culture costs real money, plain and simple.
