Hot take: I was wrong about using a 10 volume developer for all-over color on gray coverage

For years I insisted on 10 volume for my clients with 50% gray at my salon in Spokane, thinking it was gentler. Last month I switched to 20 volume on a stubborn case after reading a study, and the lift and coverage were way better without extra damage. The client's regrowth blended perfectly in one process instead of two. Has anyone else found a higher volume actually works better on resistant gray?

Ever wonder if the "gentler" way ends up making things harder? I've seen similar stuff with adhesives, where using the "safe" low-strength stuff just means the job takes twice as long and doesn't hold as well. Sometimes you need the right tool for a tough job, even if it seems stronger at first. Your story about the hair color makes total sense to me.

Exactly! That adhesive example is perfect. It's like we're all scared of the strong stuff now, so we pick the weak option and then act surprised when it fails. My whole hair mess was exactly that, trying to be careful made it way worse. Sometimes the "right" tool is the one that actually gets the job done, even if it seems harsh. Going gentle just sets you up for more work later.
