A taper at The Metro in Chicago told me my recording sounded like it was made in a trash can
I used to just set my phone on the bar or a table at shows, figuring it was fine. After a set at The Metro back in April, a guy named Dale let me hear his tape next to mine and said, "Yours sounds like it's inside a trash can." He showed me how he clamps his phone in a little $15 mount and points the mic toward the stacks, and the difference on a loud punk show was night and day. Now I always scope out a rail spot or a pole before the opener and it has saved me from a lot of muddy, bass-heavy files. What mounts are you all using for small club shows where there's nothing to clamp onto?
