Depends on what you mean by wrong. I've seen people use way too much paste and others use way too little. The real trick is getting a thin, even spread across the whole heat spreader. That Tempe rig might have had a bad mount or old paste that just pumped out.

Tbh, I'm just glad it wasn't me this time. Grant838 is right about the spread, but honestly, how do you even mess that up for five whole years? That client in Tempe must have been real patient.
