A client's old PC booted after I swapped the CMOS battery, which I didn't think would work

Had a 2012 Dell Optiplex come in last week that wouldn't post at all, just a black screen. The owner said it had been sitting for a year. On a whim, I pulled the old CR2032 battery and put in a fresh one from my kit. It booted right to the login screen. I always thought a dead battery just caused time errors, not a total failure to boot. Has anyone else seen a CMOS battery cause a complete no-post situation on older boards?

Check the battery voltage under load.

Ever try that? My multimeter showed a big drop when the starter kicked in.

Cleaned the terminals and it fixed my voltage drop.
