Showerthought: A chat with a salvage diver in Tampa about comms

He said, 'If you can't say it in three words, you're talking too much down there.' I've been trying it on my last few dives, and it really cuts through the noise. Anyone else have a rule of thumb for keeping comms clear?

Is that really working for you guys on actual dive comms though? I get the appeal of short messages in theory, but down there context is everything... a three word message could mean ten different things depending on visibility or what you're dealing with. I've seen guys try that rule and end up doing way more hand signals or surfacing to clarify stuff they could have just said in a full sentence. For me, the real trick is knowing which details matter and which ones don't, not just cutting everything down to the bone.

That "three words" rule is so real. I mean, I've started noticing how much extra junk I add to texts and emails just out of habit. It's like we're all trained to pad everything out. Getting to the point feels rude sometimes, but it's actually way clearer. Maybe it's just me but I'm trying to do it more on dry land too.

Does it feel like a power move when you send a short, clear message? I always wonder if people take it as confidence or just being cold. The training to over-explain is really hard to shake.
