How a bad lunch put me in a tight spot underwater
Honestly, I had to share this after what happened on my last job. I was on a ship hull inspection and ate a huge, greasy pizza right before gearing up. Down at 50 feet, my stomach started churning and I got dizzy. It messed with my focus and I almost missed a crack in the plating. Ngl, it scared me thinking about how food can wreck your dive safety. Now I always pack simple stuff like sandwiches or yogurt for surface breaks. Tbh, skipping heavy meals has made my dives way smoother. Please, take a minute to plan your eats on job days to avoid trouble.

Pointing out that yogurt might still mess you up on a shorter surface break because of the gas. Anything that can make you bloated or gassy is a real problem when you go back down, even from the surface. The pressure change can turn a little tummy trouble into real pain or worse, make you panic. I stick to plain carbs like a bagel or some fruit a good while before I get in the water. It's not just about heavy food, it's about anything that digests slow or creates air. What do you usually eat before a shallow dive?

Actually, Riley's point about digestion speed is key, but everyone forgets how much plain water matters too. If you're even a little dehydrated, your body handles pressure changes way worse, and that can make any stomach issue feel ten times worse down there. I chug a full bottle over the hour before gearing up, not just coffee or soda. It sounds simple, but pairing light food with good hydration totally changes how you feel during the squeeze on a descent.

You're overthinking the yogurt thing. Gas from food is hardly ever a real issue on shallow dives. I've downed yogurt right before getting back in the water and felt zero problems. The pressure change at 30 feet isn't enough to turn a bit of gas into pain. Most of the time, discomfort comes from nerves or poor gear fit, not your lunch. Focusing too much on food can make you anxious, which is worse than any snack.
