Just realized my neighbor's coffee tip saved my morning routine

My neighbor Mark saw me throwing out old coffee grounds in our building's trash room last month and asked if I ever tried using them in my garden. He said his roses in the small patch behind the building love the leftover grounds mixed into the soil, about a cup per plant. I tried it on my window box herbs and they've been growing like crazy since. Has anyone else used old coffee grounds for plants, or found another good use for them?

Oh man, that's awesome it worked for your herbs! I tried the coffee grounds thing once after reading about it online. I got a little too excited and dumped a whole can's worth on my poor basil plant. Let's just say it did not thrive, it looked kinda fried, lol. I guess the "cup per plant" tip is key, I definitely overdid it. Gonna have to try again with way less.

Honestly that's wild because my basil loved a heavy dose of grounds last year. Maybe it depends on the soil you started with? Mine was pretty worn out and the grounds gave it a real kick. Tbh I've found some plants just react differently, like my rosemary hated it but the tomatoes went crazy. Could be your basil was already getting enough food and the extra was just too much.

Yeah, that sounds exactly like what happened to mine. I got overeager and piled it on, and the leaves just went all sad and crispy. It's a real bummer when you're trying to help and end up doing the opposite. I guess some plants are just more picky than others about their food. Next time I'm sticking to a tiny sprinkle and seeing how it goes.
