I switched from paper coffee cups to a thermos 8 months ago, and the trash math finally hit me
I used to grab a paper cup with a lid on my way to work in Denver every single morning, no big deal I thought. Then I sat down in January and counted: 5 days a week, about 32 weeks so far, that adds up to around 160 cups and lids going in the bin just from me. A thermos I got for $22 has lasted the whole time, and I rinse it at night so it takes like 10 seconds. The thing that actually changed my mind was seeing the trash can at my office full of cups by 10am, all of them mine plus everyone else's. Has anyone here swapped something small like this and actually stuck with it?
That "160 cups and lids" number sounds big until you divide it out, which is like one cup per day. One cup. That is nothing in the grand scheme of things, and you spent 22 bucks plus 8 months of nightly rinsing to avoid it. I would bet real money that the cup you toss gets buried way faster than the plastic and metal thermos you bought ever will. And be honest, the thermos is not free either, it had to get made and shipped and it will sit in a landfill for a few hundred years when you lose it. The office trash can being full by 10am is not a you problem, that is just what an office looks like. Stuff like this feels good because it is easy and visible, but it barely moves the needle, so big deal.
