Remember when we used to just eyeball a flue liner for fit?

Back in the early 2000s working around Boise, I'd just hold a liner up and guess if it was right for the old clay tile. Now I use a specific flue sizing gauge from Chimney Liner Depot every single time. The change came after I had to redo a whole install in 2012 because my guess was off by an inch. Anyone else have a specific tool that totally replaced an old 'by feel' method?

Yeah, I was the same until a bad guess cost me a weekend.

Bad guesses can definitely ruin plans, but sometimes it's more about not having enough info to work with. I've found that taking an extra minute to check a couple sources first saves a lot of trouble later. It turns a wild guess into a pretty safe bet most of the time.
