Chimney caps full of bird nests are a regular sight now

I keep finding chimneys around my place with bird nests jammed in the caps. It stops proper venting and leads to more creosote. A guy down the street had a smoky house because of it. I cleaned his cap and told him how often to check. This stuff is easy to miss if you don't look up.

I gotta be honest, isn't this a bit overblown? I see nests in caps sometimes too, but most people I know never check their chimneys and it's fine. It seems like a seasonal thing the birds sort out themselves most years.

Used to brush it off like you do. Then my neighbor's place had a chimney fire from old nesting stuff. Firefighters said it happens way more than people know. Now I check mine every spring, takes five minutes. Better safe than dealing with a real mess.

Cleaned mine last fall after a similar scare. Put some wire mesh over the opening. Hasn't been a problem since.
