Got roasted by a guy at a flea market over my tape storage
Ngl, I used to just toss my cassettes in a cardboard box sideways. Some older dude at the Brimfield Flea Market saw me flipping through them and told me I was warping the tape reels by storing them flat. He showed me his whole setup with cases upright and everything. Now I keep all 60 of my tapes standing on end in a milk crate and I swear the sound quality feels cleaner on my old deck. Anyone else get called out for bad storage habits?

Is it really that serious? I've been storing tapes flat for 30 years without issue.

@wesleypatel, I think you might just have gotten lucky with your storage. Gravity pulls on those tape reels over time when they sit flat, and the plastic housing starts to warp slightly. I got schooled on this by a guy who repairs old tape decks and he showed me how the spindle holes get out of round from being stored horizontally. That leads to flutter and wow even if you don't notice it right away. Your deck might be forgiving enough to compensate, or your tapes might be on their way out slowly without you realizing it.
