Appreciation post: the 1987 Billy Joel mixtape my dad left in his truck for 15 years

Found it last summer buried under the passenger seat, tape all warped from heat, but after cleaning the pinch roller it plays without skipping - has anyone else rescued a tape that should've been dead?

Why not just buy a new copy for five bucks?

Oh come on, is it really that simple? Not if you care about the actual experience. A five buck copy from a bargain bin is probably beat to hell with scratches, missing manuals, or the disc art is all faded from sun damage. Then you factor in returning it if it doesn't work, which is a whole hassle nobody wants to deal with. Meanwhile, you could just borrow it from the library for free and return it whenever, no stress at all. Plus, you never know if that cheap copy is region locked or has some weird DRM that won't even let you install it. Library copies are usually well maintained and you get to try before you buy.
