Stopped by the renovated theater in Albany and the carpet pattern in the lobby was a perfect match for the original 1920s design.

The installer told me they had to custom dye the wool to get that exact shade of burgundy, which took four tries to match the archived fabric swatch.

Did they have to use any special techniques to get the wool to take that dye?

That custom dye process sounds like a real pain but totally worth it. Getting an exact match is always harder than people think, even with a sample to work from. Four tries sounds about right for a tricky color like burgundy. Glad they stuck with it, that attention to detail makes all the difference in a restoration.
