Honestly, I keep seeing guys skip the chalk line on subfloor layouts and it's driving me nuts

My last deck rebuild needed 16-foot joists. I set up a string line with two screw eyes and a mason line, pulled it tight, and checked it with a 4-foot level. Took maybe ten minutes and saved me a ton of headache getting everything square for the framing.

You mentioning subfloor layouts just reminded me of my neighbor's DIY patio project last summer. He eyeballed the whole thing, no strings, no chalk, just a pile of pavers and a dream. It looked like a funhouse mirror by the time he finished, all wavy lines and weird gaps. He spent more time trying to fix it with a rubber mallet than it would have taken to just snap a line at the start. Some people just have to learn the hard way.
