I asked for a 20% raise after taking on extra work for 6 months and got a promotion instead

I was handling two roles after a coworker left, so I went in asking for a $15k bump to match the added responsibility. My boss said they couldn't adjust my salary that much right now, but offered me a senior title and a 5% raise with a promise to review in a year. Has anyone else been offered a title change when you were really after more money?

Val223 has a point about the title helping later. It feels like companies do this a lot, swap real money now for a fancier label. You see it with "exposure" for artists or "experience" for interns. They give you something that sounds good but doesn't pay the bills today. A senior title only matters if you can use it to get a better job somewhere else, because that promise to review the salary next year often gets forgotten.

But a better title can lead to way more money later, right?
