Blew $9 on one of those cans with the pull tab ring that broke off clean, had to stab it open with a screwdriver
I grabbed a can of beef stew last Tuesday at the grocery on Meridian because it had the easy pull top and I was in a rush. Got home, cracked the ring back and the whole tab snapped off in my hand with the lid still sealed shut. I stood there like an idiot for a second, then dug a flathead out of the junk drawer and hammered it through the top, which sprayed stew juice across the counter and got a nice little metal shaving in with the food. Ended up tossing the whole can, so that was $9 gone and no dinner. I get why they push those tabs, but a $6 can opener has never once failed me while these rings snap all the time. Next time I am checking the lid before it goes in the cart. Anybody got a trick for prying one of these open without wrecking the food inside?
The "whole tab snapped off in my hand with the lid still sealed shut" part got me, because that tiny ring of metal acts so tough right up until you actually need it. Mine did the same thing last month and I spent ten minutes prying at it with a butter knife while my soup went cold on the stove. A $6 can opener has outlived three of my last four pull tabs, which tells you something about progress. Best trick I know is flipping the can upside down and using the opener on the bottom, since nobody ever thinks to try that side.
