Serious question, why does everyone rush to replace shutter curtains?

I see posts all the time about people swapping out shutter curtains the second they see a pinhole. Back in 1998 when I was learning from this old timer in Portland, he taught me to patch small holes with liquid electrical tape first. I still do that on my own Nikons and they keep ticking for years. Has anyone else tried patching instead of replacing, or am I just being cheap about it?

Liquid electrical tape on jeans would probably hold up better than actual denim patches at this rate. Different kind of pinhole though, unless your shutter leaves are denim.

Me and my brother used to patch holes in our jeans with iron-on patches, same idea.
