Update: Bought a $90 cable toner and it just saved a full day of work
Was tracing a line in a 1970s apartment building and the toner found the break behind a wall in under ten minutes. Without it, I would have been fishing new cable for hours. What's the best money you've spent on a tool that paid for itself right away?

Read a forum post about a toner saving someone from rewiring an entire floor.

That 1970s building wiring is a real mess. I've seen guys spend half a day on a hunch and still be wrong. A good toner just makes the guesswork disappear.
