Got my first solo fiber splice right on the third try this morning
I been working under a senior guy for about 8 months now and he finally let me do a full fusion splice on a live line by myself up in Portland. First two tries the cleave was off and I got a big air gap in the sleeve. Third try I took my time cleaning the fiber with the wipes and made sure the cleaver blade was set right. The splice loss came back at 0.03 dB and my mentor just nodded and said "not bad kid." Feels good to actually put what I learned in training to work for real. Anyone else remember their first solo splice going smooth or did it take you a few tries too?

not bad kid" is basically the highest compliment you can get in this field lol. I'd frame that splice loss reading honestly.

Framing a splice loss reading seems a tiny bit over the top, doesn't it?

You're hung up on the word "frame" but I get what skyler_kim15 is saying. That "not bad kid" thing is real in this trade. It's not about the paper frame, it's about the moment when you finally nail a perfect splice after messing up a bunch in a row. How many times have you chased a 0.01 loss and thought about taking a picture of the OTDR screen?
