TIL my old way of tracking cash was costing me money

I was at the grocery store in Boise last year and my card got declined because I'd forgotten about a $80 automatic payment, so I switched to a zero-based budget app that week. Has anyone else found a better system after a surprise like that?

My old system was a sticky note on the fridge. It lied to me constantly. The app was a rude but necessary awakening. My wallet is happier now, even if my pride isn't.
