Talked to a guy at a truck stop in Flagstaff about sleeping in your car
He said he just pulls into a 24 hour Walmart, grabs a cart, and puts a blanket over the windshield. Said it looks like you're just loading up. Did that for a whole week on a trip to Phoenix. Anyone know if this actually works or will you get a knock?

I did something similar on a cross country drive. Parked near the back of a 24 hour grocery store, not right under the lights. I used a sunshade for the windshield and a towel for the side windows. Never had a problem for a night or two.

Smart move by @pat_shah42. That setup is the key to staying unnoticed. Parking under lights just makes you a silhouette, and people get curious. The sunshade and towel trick keeps things private without looking like you are trying to hide. It is all about blending in, not standing out. A quiet back corner of a busy lot is perfect for a safe night.
