How grocery store meals saved my budget in Japan

I was in Tokyo last month and my food budget was going down fast. After three days of pricey meals, I tried something else. I went to a nearby grocery store and found cheap, fresh food. I bought rice balls, bento boxes, and drinks for much less than eating out. This switch helped me spend more on sights and souvenirs. It also let me see how locals live. Now I do this on each trip to save money.

Cheap fresh food at a Tokyo grocery store? That wasn't my experience at all. I found the produce and even the bento boxes way pricier than back home. My budget actually took a bigger hit trying to shop and cook in a tiny hotel room. Where did you go that felt so affordable?

Seriously? @avery921 you gotta go right before closing, that's when they slash prices. I hit the local markets and my meals were cheap.

Try hitting up the discount racks at the big supermarkets instead.
