Stop buying those fancy bread mixes, just do this one thing instead

I got so tired of spending $5 on a box of bread mix that barely made a loaf. Last week I tried a tip from my grandma where you just take all-purpose flour, add a spoonful of vital wheat gluten from the bulk bin at the grocery store, and bam it acts like bread flour. I was skeptical cause the gluten cost me like $1.50 for enough to last months. First loaf came out fluffy and cheap as heck. Now I make sandwich bread for under 50 cents a loaf. Has anyone else tried this or got another trick to make cheap flour behave better?
