Back in my first apartment, a bag of rice felt like a major investment.

I'd eat plain rice with soy sauce for dinner more nights than I care to admit, just to make the bag last. After a few years and learning some basics, I started mixing in a can of black beans and frozen corn to make it a real meal for about the same cost. What's a simple ingredient that changed your cheap cooking game?

My mom's old bottle of Tabasco sauce was my secret weapon. I found it in the back of a cabinet when I moved into my first place. A few drops in a bowl of cheap ramen or on top of canned chili completely changes it. It adds a kick that makes you feel like you're eating real food, not just surviving. That little bottle lasted me over a year and saved so many boring meals.

lol aaron384 you're so right about garlic powder making things feel less sad. I had that same giant container and it was a lifesaver. I started putting it in everything, even mixing it with a little mayo for a sad sandwich spread. It's crazy how one cheap spice can trick your brain into thinking you cooked a real meal.

Totally feel you on the rice and soy sauce phase. The game changer for me was a big thing of cheap garlic powder. That stuff makes anything from canned soup to plain noodles taste like you actually tried. I'd sprinkle it on buttered toast when I had nothing else. It lasts forever and makes the cheapest staples feel less sad.
