Watched a guy at the Riverside flea market turn a $3 rusted hand plane into his whole woodworking setup
I was at the Riverside flea market two Sundays ago just killing time when I stopped at this table full of rusty hand tools. An older guy next to me picked up a beat up No. 4 plane for 3 bucks, and instead of walking off he sat down on a cooler and started talking to the seller about how he only does woodworking with flea market tools now. He pulled out a little sharpening stone from his pocket and showed me the whole thing right there on the spot. He said his whole shop, bench, vise, planes, chisels, everything, cost him under 40 bucks over a couple years of hunting. I've been eyeballing new planes online for a while and they all start around 80, so hearing that kinda floored me. The seller ended up throwing in a rusty chisel for a dollar since the guy was so into it. Now I'm wondering how many of you build your hobby around secondhand tools, and how do you deal with the ones that need a ton of cleanup?
