Talked to a mason from Boston who said he never uses a line level for chimneys over 15 feet, just a plumb bob and a good eye.
He told me, 'A level can lie in the wind, but gravity never does,' and after my last chimney repair in a stiff breeze, I finally get it.

Yeah, that's so true. It's like how sometimes the simplest, oldest way of doing things is the best one. You see it everywhere once you start looking.
