Hot take: A chalk line is the secret to perfect corners

I freehanded corner bricks for years and they'd often be off. A friend showed me how to snap a chalk line from the baseline. Gave it a go on a garden wall last week and the corners came out perfect. It saved me a lot of time fixing errors later. Now I won't start a job without one. Such a simple move, but it really helped get my lines straight. Lol, should have done this sooner.

Try freehanding corners for years like some kind of stonework saint. You sweat over each brick, convinced your eye is true, then step back to see a wavy mess. A chalk line fixes that in one snap, making all that past struggle feel pretty silly. It's the building version of using a recipe after years of guessing spices. Now I keep one handy and wonder what other simple tricks I've been missing.

My buddy used to get so frustrated with his block walls because the corners never looked right. An older mason finally showed him how to snap a chalk line from the baseline, and it solved the problem immediately. @shane950 is right, it makes you kick yourself for not trying it sooner.

My uncle built a whole shed without a level, just eyeballing everything. It looked okay until you tried to roll a wheelbarrow in and it would just drift to one side. He finally got a four foot level for a deck project and his mind was blown. Sometimes the right tool feels like cheating, but it's just doing the job right.
