Warning: my neighbor asked about the lights on the Bothell-Everett Highway, and it turned into 3 hours of history
Last Saturday I was out walking my dog near the Canyon Park library when a newer neighbor stopped me and asked when those old lampposts went up along the Bothell-Everett Highway. I told her I remembered the crew working on them in the summer of 1998, because my son and I watched the whole thing from our corner lot while eating popsicles. She got so into it that we ended up on my porch for 3 hours with a map, marking the old mill site and the road that used to run through downtown before the bypass. I even dug out a photo from 2003 showing the old Bothell Way before all the new buildings went in. The funny part is I have lived here 31 years and never once talked to anyone about any of this. Has anyone else had a neighbor ask one small question and end up with a whole walking tour of old Bothell?
You say you talked for 3 hours about lampposts and mill sites, but honestly that sounds less like a nice moment and more like two people who ran out of things to say and just kept going. Most folks who have lived somewhere 31 years don't bring up 1998 popsicles because it never mattered enough to remember, not because they were waiting for the right person. And a photo from 2003 of Bothell Way? That's like keeping a receipt from a sandwich you ate last week, it's not history, it's just old. Your neighbor was probably just being polite and looking for a way to get off your porch. New people ask about lampposts because they want a quick answer, not a map and a walking tour.
