Hot take: My friend said houseplants are just decor, not a real hobby.

He said it while I was repotting my Monstera in my apartment last month. Has anyone else had to defend actually caring about their plants?

What is it about hands-on stuff that makes some people think it's not a real interest? I get the same thing when I'm fixing up old furniture.

That "not a real interest" thing happens with my woodworking too. People see a finished table but don't get the hours of sanding and fixing mistakes. If the result looks easy, they assume the process was too.

Yeah, I just tell them to try keeping a calathea alive for a month. It's a whole skill set, learning light and watering schedules. If it was just decor, they wouldn't die on you the second you mess up.
